The Scholes Lab welcomes creative and driven students with interests in environmental chemistry and engineering. We believe that working as a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives is critical to advancing environmental health, sustainability, and equity. Prospective group members from communities underrepresented in STEM fields are particularly encouraged to apply.
If you are interested in joining our team, please review the information below and contact me by filling out an interest form, linked here. I will generally only respond to inquiries from prospective group members who have thoughtfully completed this form.
Undergraduate research positions
We frequently have opportunities for excellent undergraduate students to participate in our group as research assistants. UBC students may be eligible for co-op placements in our lab or part-time positions through Work Learn. Paid summer positions are available for students who receive external funding, such as the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award. Eligible students interested in applying should contact me (fill out the interest form) to discuss their application.
MASc and PhD student positions
Graduate student positions are limited and competitive. Students who apply for and receive outside scholarships or fellowships greatly increase their likelihood of admission. Prospective graduate students are encouraged to check their eligibility for external fellowships to support their research in our group prior to filling out the interest form. Additional details about graduate admissions and minimum admissions requirements can be found here.
Some examples of external fellowships are provided below:
NSERC Graduate Scholarships: Eligible students interested in applying should contact me to discuss writing a proposal together no later than November 1 of the year prior to starting your graduate studies.
International students may consider applying for Fulbright graduate student awards and fellowships from the American Water Works Association (U.S. citizens), the PEO International Peace Scholarship (non-U.S./Canadian citizens), Faculty for the Future, and other programs. Please verify your eligibility for fellowships and reach out well before the deadline to apply (ideally at least 2 months).
Postdoctoral researcher positions
Postdoctoral positions are available upon joint application for funding. If you are interested in working together on a fellowship or grant application, please reach out via the interest form.
