Research Opportunities

The Scholes Lab welcomes creative and driven students with interests in environmental engineering and chemistry.

We believe that working as a team of individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives is critical to advancing environmental health, sustainability, and equity. We recognize that historical and present-day marginalization creates barriers that limit the equal participation of individuals from diverse backgrounds (e.g., women and gender minorities, Indigenous Peoples, racialized individuals, persons with disabilities, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities). We strive to mitigate these barriers, support the success of individuals from underrepresented groups, and create a welcoming environment for all.

MASc and PhD student positions

I am currently seeking multiple PhD or MASc-to-PhD* students to join my group in 2027. If you are interested in applying, please fill out the interest form linked here.

*UBC Civil Engineering only admits students directly to the PhD program who already hold a master’s degree. However, students interested in pursuing a PhD directly after their undergraduate studies can apply to the MASc program and transfer to the PhD after one year of study. If you intend to pursue the MASc-to-PhD transfer route, please indicate your interest in a PhD when completing the interest form.

Your chances of admission to graduate programs are higher if you receive external fellowships. Some examples of external fellowships are provided below:

NSERC Graduate Scholarships: Eligible students interested in applying should
contact me to discuss writing a proposal together no later than November 1 of
the year prior to starting your graduate studies.

International students may consider applying for Fulbright graduate student awards and fellowships from the American Water Works Association (U.S. citizens), the PEO International Peace Scholarship (non-U.S./Canadian citizens), Faculty for the Future, and other programs. Please verify your eligibility for fellowships and reach out well before the deadline to apply.

Postdoctoral researcher positions

I am currently hiring for a postdoctoral researcher position in the area of stormwater contaminants and nontarget analysis with a start date in 2026/2027. Additional details can be found in the position description linked here. If you have completed a PhD in a related field, have direct experience with LC-MS/MS (and preferably high-resolution mass spectrometry), and are seeking a postdoctoral position, please apply!

Additional postdoctoral positions are available upon joint application for funding. If you are interested in working together on a fellowship or grant application, please reach out via the interest form linked here.

Undergraduate research positions

We frequently have opportunities for excellent undergraduate students to participate in our group as research assistants. UBC students may be eligible for co-op placements in our lab or part-time positions through Work Learn. Paid summer positions are available for students who receive external funding, such as the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award. Eligible students interested in applying should contact me via email to discuss opportunities.
